  • Learn Scala (A functional language which runs on the JVM)
  • Deploy code to production on your first day, push new features and data to users and get analytics to measure the results
  • Get to choose which area you’d like to work on
  • Work on and learn a ton about one or more of these areas: managing big data, sql and no-sql databases, web development, web analytics, a/b testing, web crawling, natural language processing and more.in Waterloo, Ontario. What we look for

  • Enthusiastic people who love building and learning, and thrive on responsibility and teamwork
  • Personal projects! Show us stuff you’ve built, ideally on the web
  • Students from computer science or computer/electrical engineering programs
  • Top-notch communication skills – we’re a small team, you’ll need to fit in well
  • Bonus: Active github account, worked at a startup before, active in open source, personal projects, active blog, Linux experience, spending way too much time researching which product to buy

At Sortable we code in Scala, but we don’t expect you to know it already. We use open source tools such as Lift, PostgreSQL, Redis, Mercurial, Jenkins, ElasticSearch and we deploy on Amazon EC2 and S3.

If you want to really impress us we’ve devised a coding challenge. It will give you an example of the types of problems we work on at Sortable. Completing the coding challenge and sending your solution along with your resume to challenge@sortable.com is the best way to show us how much you love programming.

WHERE IS SORTABLE LOCATED?

We’re in Waterloo, in the Bauer Building, just south of UpTown Waterloo.

WHAT’S NEARBY?

Just downstairs in our building there are some great places to eat including Vincenzo’s (gourmet sandwich bar, hot plate counter, sushi and more), the Bauer Kitchen (a great restaurant), and the Bauer Bakery (quick food to go). If you feel like a short stroll, UpTown Waterloo is just down the street, where there are tons of great bars, restaurants, and stores. Also, the city bus stops right outside our new building!

Our mission at Sortable is to make it easy for people to make decisions about which product or service to use, for example their next camera, phone, or tv purchase, or their next meal, movie, or trip. Sortable’s focus is making these decisions easy for ordinary people by handling all the data analysis and surfacing the best options in simple, beautiful interfaces. Sortable is a 10+ person engineering driven startup, our fast growing websites are used by millions of visitors each month, and we need to expand!
