Hi Matthew, I think both of these cameras would be awesome. The Sony NEX cameras are really small compared to DSLRs but offer similar image quality and features. They have some great features like twilight mode for low light (or natural light) shots too.
Either of these will be a huge step up from a point and shoot, though, the main limitation of these cameras compared to a DSLR (like the Nikon D3100 or Canon T3i) are that you'll have much fewer lenses to choose from, but, many people only ever use one lens.
