total beginner wants to carry just one piece of kit for holidays , general use etc , but also want to start recording pictures of small animals/birds at distances up to 100 yds.
Is there one overwhelming winner ? really appreciate the advice, many thanks.

Which camera do you recommend for Mick-Hill?

Panasonic DMC-FZ150 - $547
12 MP|24x f/2.8|1/2.5" CMOS|3" LCD
Canon SX40 - $305
12 MP|35x f/2.7|1/2.5" CMOS|2.7" LCD

I always took my sx30is while golfing to shoot mostly sand hill cranes and their chicks and other animals, and it worked great. Now I use the SX40 and it's even better. The extra zoom really helps to get them even closer, I'm usually between 600 and 840mm when I shoot. This camera also works great for general things as well. I've brought it (the 40) to the Kennedy Space center and was able to shoot the various structures from a mile away at least. I've taken the 30 to all my family vacations and it's perfect. No use spending thousands of dollars for the larger sensor and other features of a D-SLR if you're not a pro.

Would it be fast enough to capture a humming bird?,

The shutter speed can be as short as 1/3200 sec. and in burst mode, you can get 8 shots at a 10 shot/second speed. I would say yes, although I've never shot a humming bird.

The Canon has a much bigger zoom range, which will be handy for far away animals. Although I can't say whether the amount of zoom will be sufficient for things 100 yards away.
