I prefer the S100 after owning both, I agree with Alex both are great, but I feel the S100 has the edge on quality and sharpness especially at high iso. I feel the LX5 can get quite muddy when you look at the images closely

Hi John, you can't go wrong with either of these cameras, they are regarded as the best cameras in that size for image quality, low light shooting, and advanced features/controls.
However, neither has much zoom. You should seriously consider a travel zoom camera like the Panasonic ZS20, Sony HX30V or Canon SX260 HS. They typically have 18-20x zoom, which will be great for trips to take pictures outside, of kids or animals, and anything far away.
Cameras are all about tradeoffs unfortunately.
