Social gatherings, lots of evening shots (eg: dinners), upload onto website, candid shots - main use

Used compact cameras for a long time. Very little SLR knowledge. Intend to take up photography lessons to learn more on proper use. Image is important, especially evening and poorly lighted scenes.

Which camera do you recommend for Shirley-Boey?

Samsung NX200 - $604
20 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" OLED
Canon G12 - $509
10 MP|5x f/2.8|1/1.7" CCD|2.8" LCD

Hi Shirley, I wouldn't generally recommend the Samsung NX200 mirrorless camera, if you do want a mirrorless camera (smaller than a DSLR), then you should look at the Sony NEX cameras, the NEX-3, NEX-5N etc. They have great image quality, tons of great features like twilight, rapid fire, panorama etc.

The Canon G12 is a great camera, but has a much smaller image sensor than any of the mirrorless cameras, so it will never compete for image quality especially in low light, however, it is one of the best fixed lens cameras in that size and price range.
