I am an owner of the P500 currently, and let me tell you, the battery life is a massive downside on this! I can barely shoot for more than 15-20 minutes at a time, sometimes even less on a full charge. Also the battery charger makes a really loud high pitched noise, and the lens distortion is amazingly awful. I have also found that it struggles with the vibrant oranges in sunrise and sunsets. The movie mode is fairly good, except if you want to record sound. There is no external mic jack and if you want to zoom..... well good luck with the sound of the lens not ruining your video! Even with all these negatives, I have still managed to get some fairly decent shots with it, but it's definitely not easy, even using manual mode the whole time. The DSLR will give you much more control, better images with a much larger sensor, and in the long run it is definitely the better choice. After saying all this, i'm off to buy a canon 60d(:

Sounds like your battery and charger are defective.

It depends on how far you want to go with photography. Do you want to have the ability to change lenses, flash, filters and settings based on the photo you are hoping to get, or do you want a great point and shoot camera that will not let you down?
The D3100 is great for beginners, it has an easy to use guide that will help you set up your camera to shoot in different settings, but it is also more expensive.
