as a beginner which camera would you suggest

I found both cameras used. The xti is the body and 18-55 lens only for $280.
The xs has been used much less, comes with: Camera body (rebel xs)
Lens Kit (18-55)
Carrying Case
Sd Card 8gb
2 batteries.
1 wall/car charger
original box manuals and software.
A/V cable
all for the same price. I have never worked with a digital camera only film cameras. any help would be greatly appreciated...or is there something else out there I should look for? Thanks
