I'm going to be taking a few trips and would like to take some great photos

I'm a relative beginner, I bought an SLR several years ago, then my first digital point and shoot and I currently have a Sony DSC-W290. I have several trips to Europe planned and I'm trying to determine if I could get by with just a point and shoot or would an entry level DSLR be the way to go.

i recommend the T3. Despite it being heavier and bigger, you want to get the best quality pictures you possibly could get. Using a T3, will help you get even better images than the sony will. you don't wanna take chances or compromise.

If you already have the Cyber-shot DSC-W290 then I'd suggest just sticking with it. Presumably, you are already comfortable using it. You won't have to learn the controls for a new camera. The T3 has a much larger sensor, which means better quality images and better low-light performance... but it's also much bigger and heavier.

I would agree with what Phil said, save your money and use the W290 for this trip, and perhaps buy a higher end DSLR when you have a bit more saved.
