I use our camera to take photos of indoor/outdoor family gatherings, vacations, band concerts.

I am not a beginner but definitely not an expert. I want pictures to be the right color, I'd like to be able to take indoor pictures that aren't grey, and I'd like the camera to be fairly simple to use--I don't have much patience to stop and adjust 'scene settings'. I have a very old Nikon Coolpix with a 3x optical zoom. We are on a tight budget so we buy the best products we can afford with the understanding that we will be stuck with it for 7 or 8 years.

Which camera do you recommend for Julie-Woeltje?

Panasonic DMC-ZS7 - $247
12 MP|12x f/3.3|1/2.5" CCD|3" LCD
Panasonic ZS15
12 MP|16x f/3.3|1/2.5" CMOS|3" LCD

I am not sure if you will find many point and shoot cameras that will last you 7 to 8 years, but if you take care of the Panasonic ZS15 it will treat you right. Go with the ZS15.

I own the ZS7 and found it to be a great little camera and it actually performs pretty well in low light. Better than my older Lumix camera.  I also found that the price is very affordable. I found it for only $146 with tax.  I am now considering the ZS15 as well, but for its HDR feature and possibly for its manual setting feature.  I think you will be happy with the ZS7. It is very compact compared to the ZS15 which is quite chunky.

Oops. I actually own the SZ7, not the ZS7. Sorry for the confusion :)

I think both cameras will perform similarly in low light. But the overall advantage goes to the ZS15, which has a longer zoom and is two years newer.

no they both have the same zoom. And who cares about newer? Lots of cameras are newer! [edited by admin]

According to our stats, the ZS15 has 16x zoom and the other is only 12x. Also, newer cameras tend to have newer technology and features. Also, please watch your language as this is a family-friendly site.  Swearing at me because you disagree with me is uncalled for.
