I currently have a canon xsi, with several lenses. A canon 70-200mm f/4 L ,55-250mm, 50mm 1.8 ,18-55is . I eventually want to sell my photo's and take pictures professionally. Unsure which camera to invest my money in. This will no doubt be the camera I have for a very long time.

I recently upgraded from the XSi to the 5D Mark II and couldn't be happier.

As I'm sure you know, your 18-55mm and 55-250mm are incompatible with the 5D. So if you're happy with only having 50mm and 70-200mm then go for the 5D. But keep in mind that 200mm on the 5D will look like 125mm does on your XSi. So if wildlife will be a big component of your photography then consider going with the 50D for the extra reach. But overall, it's hard to argue against a full-frame sensor.

There is no "extra reach", it's just cropped in more.

What you say is only true when the ratio of megapixels between the two cameras is proportionate to the crop factor (which it's not in this case). If you take a 5DII image and crop down 1.6x you end up with a 13MP image. the 50D takes 15MP images. So you are effectively getting more reach.

The best advice is learn the trade first and  then get the best lenses you can afford. If you lose interest in photography you can get back most of your investment in lenses (especially the canon L range). Body wise that's more money down the street... A great lens in front of a   modest camera is a better combo than a modest lens in front of a top camera.

If I may suggest, since you already own the 70-200 ditch the 55-250 to gather some money for your new body. Also sell the 18-55 because you won't take full advantage of the 50d nor will fit the 5d.

I own the 50d and I'm saving for the 5d which is a better camera, but I have accomplished great results with it, which granted me some paid work and also several local photography contests.

Since you haven't gathered a good selection of lenses I say start with a 2nd hand 50d and with the remaining 1300$+  get yourself a Canon 24-104 or 24-70 and a flash like the 580 ex II.

The L lenses will be a bit long for the 50d ( the best match is the ef-s 17-55 is f.28) but will give you excellent results and future compatibility with the 5d. Some people use the canon 17-40 L with the 50d because they'll work better as a standard.

When your backpack is full of lenses, and when you've learned the trade then get yourself the canon 5d.

it is not really that bad to stick to crop sensor DSLR especially the beautiful Canon EOS 7D.... it got 19 AF points, ALL CROSS TYPE, the 8fps burst rate is enough for almost everything, having 18-55mm IS and 55-250mm lens makes it even more sensible to stick to crop sensors....

The 60D is quite a beauty. Nice speed, great feautres, plus it's not as costly as say, the 5D MII, which while an amazing piece it might be a little beast to tame. You already have a great lens, the 70-200 f4L, and the nifty fifty, and with the money you will save going the 60D way you can save for a nice piece of glass like a 14mm f/2.8L II USM, or even a 100mm 2.8L or a 17-40 f/4L USM.
