I want to capture my son out on the soccer field and my daughter at swim meets in low light in indoor pools. Help!

Which camera do you recommend for Stacy-Smith-Prater?

Nikon J1 - $397
10 MP|Nikon CX CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D3100 - $447
14.2 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

Get the Nikon D3100, you should only consider the J1 if its really important for the camera to be small.  The Nikon D3100 will get much better picture quality especially in low light, and will have many more lenses available.

To get good photos of your son on the soccer field you should get a zoom lens.  Here are some zoom lenses for the D3100 from our sister site LensHero you could consider!

For 100$ than the 3100 you can get a great camera

This is a great sports camera (because of 6fps) and also has excellent low light capabilities.

Go with the Nikon D3100, DSLRs are a proven technology, Mirrorless cameras will one day be better but they are not yet.

DSLR will help you with more shutter speed that will freeze the moments you want, and do not forget to use prime lens (50mm AF Nikkor) that will be too much helpful for you to take great photos in low light with extreme sharpness. :) Enjoy...!!
