    If you're interested in learning more about photography, and could see yourself buying additional lenses (check out D3100 lenses at LensHero), then I'd recommend the D3100.  It's image quality is much better, especially in low light, it has a lot of manual features easily accessible, great focusing, and includes a guide mode to help you learn more advanced features.

      The Nikon P510 is a superzoom (point and shoot) with a 41.7x zoom lens.
