    The 600D and the 550D are basically the same camera except the 600D has a flip-out screen, which is better for video.  Either camera would suit a beginner just fine.  But if you are serious about shooting professionally then you should consider a better camera from the start.

    There are a few more advantages of the 600D worth considering;

    The 600D has an on screen feature guide to help you understand each mode clearly

    It has in built wireless flash control. Yes you can still sync a flash wirelessly with the 550D provided you use a external wireless adaptor, but that will set you back around £60. With the 600D you can set up a very inexpensive home/portable studio using multiple flashguns. Someone please let me know if I'm wrong, but this is what I believe.

    The sound configurations for movie mode now has the option to set the maximum input for those occasion when the sound is too loud. If you use the 550D in a loud music venue, you are likely to lose most the the sound quality. But with the 600D you can tweak the sound settings and solve this problem.

    And yes the LCD screen flips out, which is very useful for getting tricky angles for photos as well as video. It also helps if you are a really short person like myself... :p

    4 great reasons to buy the 600D.

      The eTTL preflash is only useful if the external flashes can see the on-board flash (they won't be able to from inside a softbox... but an umbrella might be ok). Plus they'd have to be expensive Canon flashes as opposed to more affordable off-brand flashes or actual studio strobes. Regardless of which camera you get, I'd strongly recommend picking up wireless remote triggers rather than relying on the Canon wireless system.
