Trying to decide between Canon G12 or Nikon P510?

Janet-Niezen | Asked  over a year ago | Last response was over a year ago

Besides everyday family pictures, will use when we travel.  Like to take pictures of our family skiing and snowboarding and out on the water at the cottage. I like the zoom of the nikon but also like that the canon is more compact.  The nikon is new on the market whereas the canon has been out for a couple of years and wondering if a new one is coming?

Which camera do you recommend for Janet-Niezen?

Canon G12 - $509
10 MP|5x f/2.8|1/1.7" CCD|2.8" LCD
Nikon P510 - $339
15.9 MP|41.7x f/3.0|1/2.5" CMOS|3" LCD

Canon kept G12 in the lineup for now but has G1X out, which is like a souped up G12 with a huge sensor for better overall IQ and a huge increase in price (2X).

If you are going to be taking the camera to active style places as you mentioned such as skiing/snowboarding and out on the water, you might want to consider more rugged, water and impact resistant model like Nikon AW100 or Panasonic DMC-TS3.

If you like G12, you might want to also consider Nikon's P7100. It has similar features and size but Nikon has a longer zoom lens with useful range of 28-200mm.

If you like P510 and it longer zoom, you might also look at Canon's SX40, which also has simliarly long zoom range.  Both are competitively priced.

G12 and P510 are completely different class of cameras.   Since your priority is stated as distant object, P510 or Canon SX40 might be the cameras to consider as well as Panasonic DMC-FZ150. At their maximum zoom, it will be useful to use a tripod.

You definitely can't beat the zoom on the Nikon -- however I've read that it's very slow to focus when zoomed in, which in turn eats the battery quickly.  But what I like best about the P510 vs. the G12 for travel is that the P510 has a built-in GPS for geotagging your photos.

If you are looking for other Canons, check out the Canon PowerShot G1X.  It's more expensive but also has a much larger image sensor and far better image quality.  It can also be used in lower light situations.
