Take pictures of kids while travelling (and at home)

I'm a beginner who's been using an old Nikon D70 for last 7 years - in auto mode only.  I want something lighter and easier to travel with but don't want to sacrifice photo quality - and I want some easy video options too.

Which camera do you recommend for Alex-Jenkins?

Sony DSC-HX9v - $480
15.9 MP|16x f/3.3|1/2" EXMOR|3" LCD
Sony NEX-5 - $498
14 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

For the Minor Price difference you could go either way.

What I would recommend, is looking into the NEX-5 "N" model.  Chances are you may find it for the same price listed here for the standard Nex-5.

It is both Higher Megapixels and Higher Quality Video.

If you are used to the Look of the photos that the Nikon Gave you, the Built-in lens on the Cybershot, leaves a bit of a weak spot with Depth of Field, and with Low Light situations... Compared to a DSLR, or Mirrorless Camera, Like the NEX.

In Laymens terms, Depth of field, makes your subject stand out more, or blend in, depending on your setup.  Auto Mode on the NEX works well enough to never need to change it... and My vote goes to the NEX.
