I need help buying a camera.

traceynaples-yahoo-com | Asked  over a year ago | Last response was 9 months ago

I am a beginner.  I have a rebel xt which I never used due to it being so large and I did not have time to learn.  I want to get into serious photography for vacations and the kids.  Should i upgrade the lens for my xt or upgrade the body also?  I don't have a lot of money to spend so I need to do this wisely.  Thanks.  Also if I can only buy one or two lenses other than the kit lens what is best?  Thanks so much

Which camera do you recommend for traceynaples-yahoo-com?

Canon T3 - $332
12.2 MP|APS-C CMOS|2.7" LCD
Canon T2i - $500
17.9 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

The T2i is a slightly better camera than the T3 but they're so close that you won't notice.  However, the T3 is also only slightly better than the Xt.

If you can't afford to spend much then I'd suggest trying to upgrade lenses on your Xt first.  For instance, the EF 50mm f/1.8 lens is a very affordable choice and will allow you to shoot in lower light than you would be able to with your kit lens.

I agree with Philip-Davis about keeping the XT. I had that body for a long time and it does a pretty good job. SO if you haven't really used it, get it out of the box, buy an EF-S 18-135mm and start shooting! Many people swear by the 50mm f2.8, I don't have it because I don't do portrait, but hey, the nifty-fifty is quite cheap and it's nice lens

Now, to my suggestion. Why I suggest a T3i? Simple, you can find this body paired with the 18-135 as a kit, so you won't spend a lot of money and will have a lens that will definetly cover all kinds of shoots one usually get when on a vacation.

The most important thing to take your camera out and use it (and if you are like me, read the manual. i know, sounds boring but you learn what your gear can do)

I think the real advantage of upgrading from the Xt to the T3 is that your maximum ISO would increase from 1600 to 6400... and you'd still have enough money left over to buy the EF 50mm f/1.8 lens.
