Pictures of my grandkids, garden and vacation shots

Total beginner.  Have only used "point and shoot" cameras before.  Looking for something that will be easy for me to use and figure out. but will still get good "zoom" shots and good quality photos I can  crop and still have a decent picture.   Have just purchased the DMCG3 and now see a Nikon D3100 for the same price with a 18-55VR lens and a 55-200 lens and a training pack bundle (2 training DVDs) and a carrying case.  Wondering if I should return the Panasonic and get the Nikon.

Which camera do you recommend for jancasey?

Panasonic DMC-G3 - $249
15.8 MP|Four Thirds CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D3100 - $447
14.2 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

Without a doubt, the image quality of the Nikon, trumps the Panasonic to a point where the two are in different categories.

if you are saying you can still get that bundle... to me its a no-brainer... and I am not a Nikon-guy... but reviewers sing nothing but praises of the Nikon, and I am tempted to see what all the fuss is about myself.

Search around Flickr, most photos actually tell you what kind of camera was used... and you can actually search the photos to find pictures from the camera of choice...

I normally see lots of the D3100 photos that I enjoy... and rarely see anything from panasonic aside from hiptser styled movies... even though they look magnificent, I still rarely see any photos.

You are comparing apples and oranges. A Nikon D3100 is a digital SLR while a Lumix G is a mirrorless system camera (still not sure which acronym will catch on).

Prematurely saved. I'm a long time Nikon man (going back to the 1980's with N2020 and FM2n bodies). Sadly Nikon's mirrorless system camera the Nikon 1's sensor is just too small. M43 is a good system with a reasonable compromise between tiny point-and-shoot sensors and aps size sensors. I think the G3 is great; my biggest worry is if the system will catch on. Now that Sony bought Olympus I have to wonder if Olympus will drop M43 to use the Sony NEX mount. If Olympus drops M43 that would leave only Panasonic using the format for system cameras (looks like it is well enough established as a motion picture format). If Pana is the only M43 camera than I wouldn't expect much of a futre for the format.

    Hello

I reccommend the GMC-G3 because it easy to use right out of the box and  because its smaller than the the Nikon 3100  it will take better pictures but feel the same as the point and shoots you are use.
