Is a Canon SX 40 worth buying in my situation?

Phillip-Ziegler | Asked  over a year ago | Last response was over a year ago

I have a Nikon 3100 and a Lumix FX35. Both are fine. When I travel I take only the Lumix. But my wife wants to use the Lumix now and I am trying to decide whether to replace my travel camera with th Canon SX40 that gets such great reviews. I looked at it in th store but wasn't crazy about the way the viewfinder enlarges the area of focus. Seems confusing. But this camera gets such grat reviews and is in my price range. What are peoples's thoughts? Any other competitors with considering? I want an eyepiece viewer.

Which camera do you recommend for Phillip-Ziegler?

Panasonic DMC-FZ35 - $498
12 MP|18x f/2.8|1/2.5" CCD|2.7" LCD
Canon SX40 - $319
12 MP|35x f/2.7|1/2.5" CMOS|2.7" LCD

I bought an SX40 about a month ago and returned it within 3 days.  It felt very cheap, and the quality of the photos did not seem any better than those of my FZ35 which I've had for about 2 years.  Another consideration is the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ150, which in my view is a far better camera than the SX40.

Made better, more features, better images.

I respect Canon as a company and have owned their cameras for many, many years, but I would not recommend the SX40.  I also owned the camera 4 or 5 models previous to it, the S5i, which was a great camera.

I recommend you go DSLR or DMC FZ150.

In any event, try to buy a camera made in Japan (such as Canon and Panasonic).

The build quality and attention to detail are excellent, not that this is any new or secret information.
