when u say u r an intermediate photographer and care about image quality - P510 should be out of ur list when d5100 is in , get 1 prime glass and a sturdy tripod to get the best results - invest in extension tubes or macro filters for macro photography - for video considerations - try evaluating the D3200 rather

For going in the Navy I'd say neither of these cameras, at least for now. For now get an inexpensive, small, point-n-shoot so you don't miss 'awkard' pictures when you first go in.
Then, read up on all cameras and brands. Buy what you've decided is best for you (you'll have ship mates who will have any number of cameras you can, gently, try out on board) when you get to your first port of call, home port (if overseas) or overseas duty station, buy whatever you chosen in the PX/BX and save a bunch....A -BUNCH- of money there.Having said this, I'd look to a DSLR, or at least something with interchangeable lenses. But don't wait too long, until everything that seemed 'exotic' is now just everyday at where ever....like I did ;( Good luck, and God speed sailor...from an Army 'bullet magnet' (infantry).
