part time wedding photographer - about 4-5 per year plus personal pictures

Nina-Murray | Asked  over a year ago | Last response was 6 months ago

I take pictures of my family and nature, and do 4-5 weddings per year as a part time photographer.  I have two cameras already, the last one I bought being a D90.  Looking for a newer primary camera so that the d90 is my backup.  Not sure that I want to spend $3000 (inc Canadian taxes) on a camera unless there is a huge difference.

Which camera do you recommend for Nina-Murray?

Nikon D700 - $3,500
12.1 MP|Full frame CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D7000 - $897
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

If you can afford it, you'll love the D700. I own one (along with a D70, and D200), and the high ISO image quality is awesome.  Also, being full frame, you tend to get shallower depth of field which I love.

The viewfinder is huge too, once you've used it you won't want to go back to the D90 :)

The D700 is a full-frame camera and has much better image quality in low light conditions (according to DxOMark, looks like it's a full stop better)

D700...no question.  Excellent low light / high ISO performance and built like a tank.

How is the D7000 in low light?? This fits better into my budget at the moment. I will be using this for Weddings and Portraits?

Get a D600.  Everything about it is better than the D700.

I had this situation last year, and i bought D7000+Tamron 17-50 to get money for D700 and 24-70 but when I had a chance I toke d700+24-120mmF4+50mm1.4G from University.

Now, one year later I have bought D700+24-70 2.8 and  D7000 (still using in weddings)+ rented 10-24mm

But difference is huge! Evan D7000+24-70, just have not that juicy picture, what you can get from D700! Go for D700 or wait D600

D7000+Tamron 17-50 I used for club photography, there at the end picture is small enough (640px longest edge) that all that lack of details, and noise of ISO 3400;4000 just disappears. But in wedding photography, I want to give my clients the best results.
