Being  a beginner in  professional photography, i wish to bring  the best out of my camera and capture nature's bounty to its maximum and i don't want a wrong decision stop me from achieving that. So i would like a valuable suggestion on which DSLR will suit  for a beginner photographer like me.

These are both excellent choices to start with.

If you want to shoot landscapes then also consider getting a set of filters -- either the screw-on glass kind (I've been very happy with Tiffen filters) or the drop-in kind (check out Cokin A-series or P-series).  In particular, look for the following filters: ND (neutral density), GND (graduated neutral density) and CPL (circular polarizing).  Don't forget a sturdy tripod.

Or if you prefer wildlife, you'll want a good zoom lens for the big guys and maybe a good macro lens for the little guys.

My recommendation... Make friends with other camera fellows nearby... find out what they use... and if they will let you borrow a lens once in a while... obviously buy which ever camera they use...

aside from that... the Nikon has a lot of fun Filter built in... and the Canon... well its a Canon... I never have any complaints aside from the same complaints I would have about the 3100... and that is the cheap feeling in your hands.

Both have very plasticy buttons, that are less than desired after using something a little more professional.

in the same vein... you may want to try a higher level camera from either of these two manufacturers... The 60D or the D5100, from Canon or Nikon (respectively) are much better Photographic choices, and have more intuitive WHEELS on the back, rather than a Nintendo-Esque directional pad, that requires you to look at the camera, instead of shooting.

Both cameras are great for beginners, just make sure you invest in good lenses, our sister site LensHero is a good place to start.

If I had to decide I think I would go with the Canon 550D, because it has a built in focus motor and the D3100, relies on the motor in the lens.
