First DSLR

Steve | Asked  over a year ago | Last response was over a year ago

I am looking to get my first DSLR and am bombarded with so many choices.  I am looking at the Nikon D3100 and the Canon T2i.  I have always used Canon point and shoot cameras..so I naturally started looking at only Canon DSLR cameras.  The camera I'm looking for will be used by myself and my wife (both beginners) ans will be used for general photography of the family, sports and landscape.  I'm looking at kits of both.  The Nikon comes with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses and the Canon comes with the 18-55mm and 55-250mm.  Both are very close in price (with the Canon costing less than $100 more).  All the articles I read are pretty much the same...either camera is good.  So should I just go with the cheaper (Nikon) of the two OR spend the extra $$ for the Canon (which seems to have more features that I may or may not use) but have used the brand before.  I keep waffling about which camera to purchase.  I think I'm going to enjoy taking pictures with the DSLR vs my point and shoot and don;t want to outgrow the camera too quickly.

Thanks!

Which camera do you recommend for Steve?

Nikon D3100 - $447
14.2 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Canon T2i - $500
17.9 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

As I'm sure you've read they're both great cameras.  I'd recommend go for the cheaper camera!  You could even get a 50mm prime lens with the extra $, which is a great way to learn more about photography and shoot in natural light.

Thanks for the input. After much debate...I just purchased the Canon T2i with the kit lens (18-55mm) on Amazon for $549. This put me way under budget and have room for an extra lens...once I get a feel for the camera :).
