Digital Photography Class, Digital Storytelling, film making, and casual use

Gabe-Farmer | Asked  over a year ago | Last response was a year ago

I am a beginner in photography, but my major in college is very photography intensive. I want a camera that will be able to take me through college, and even a little into professional use as a graduate and begin to save for a professional level camera.

Which camera do you recommend for Gabe-Farmer?

Sony A57 - $499
16 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D5100 - $497
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

Sony A57 is much better camera than Nikon D5100.I tested both and with the D5100 is the camera handling totally horrible. On this page you will usually find any image quality(IQ) results quantified by some number, but this really doesn't correspond to the reality. But the IQ is probably the only theoretical positive point for Nikon D5100. Anything else was very disappointing with this camera and I returned it back to store.

Using Sony camera you will find out, that other DSLR manufacturers take their cameras seriously (not as Nikon does) and provide much more added value to the end user.

The innovations provided by Sony during last years are significant and if they'll go this way, you'll be happy to using this system even much more in the future.

If you are not going to use video o lot, I'd recommend Nikon D5100, cause of it's awesome low light performance. If you are intending to buy lenses they will become actually cheaper then Sony's, cause they will not have to be as brighter. (being brighter can increases a lens value A LOT more then the stabilization stuff). but if you are going to use video or shoot sports, go Sony!

More features for only 100$ more. Plus the A57 has better Video quality as far as i have seen, and is suitable for dynamic pictures with faster autofocus.

    D5100 is better for stills

The A57 is much better than D5100 because:

    More focus points15vs11
    More cross-type points 3 vs 1

    Video Autofocus phase detection

Shoots 12 FPS wow its better than nikon D4 and D3

and  60fps in Full HD !!! Sony's DSLT are incredible cameras !
