Go for the D7000.  It is the better camera overall.  The D300 does give you a faster fps and better autofocusing but everything else is better on the D7000.  I am a professional photographer and I shoot mostly sports with the D7000 and 6 fps is more than enough.  The camera is not the most important thing though.  Good glass is a must in order to get the sharpest photos.  Don't go for outdated, get what's the best quality for the money.

if you're going to shoot sports, i would recommend you the d7000 because you need fast shutter speed and for that you need high iso capability. But of course now you can find a d300 second hand for less than 700$ and invest in glass.... it's your choice ;)

as adrian rightly said - incest in good glass with a second d300 or go for latest stuff  - - i would recommend d7000 a point over d300 only due to the technology advancement - u can look out for d600 which wud be a low cost FX body and targeted at approx 1500$ body only

If the money is there then the D7000: newer technology in this case does mean better quality images, lower noise, etc etc.
