Beginner.  Have heard the Nikon is easier to use but like the Canon too.  I lost my Lumix smaller camera and am considering upgrading to SLR but doubt I will change lenses much and definitely not a professional.

Which camera do you recommend for Mimi-McMullen?

Canon T3i - $549
17.9 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D5100 - $497
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

If you don't intend to change lenses then I'd suggest something more like Canon G1X that will give you a little more zoom than the kit lens on the T3i and have a similar image quality.  I'm not familiar with the Nikon equivalent of the G1X... but there probably is one.

I would take the Nikon D5100, because of it's good low light performance and amazing image quality.
