If you don't intend to change lenses then I'd suggest something more like Canon G1X that will give you a little more zoom than the kit lens on the T3i and have a similar image quality. I'm not familiar with the Nikon equivalent of the G1X... but there probably is one.
Beginner. Have heard the Nikon is easier to use but like the Canon too. I lost my Lumix smaller camera and am considering upgrading to SLR but doubt I will change lenses much and definitely not a professional.

I would take the Nikon D5100, because of it's good low light performance and amazing image quality.
