Shooting children & close up pictures

Brooklyn-Ann-Haag | Asked  over a year ago | Last response was a year ago

I am more of a beginner. I love taking pictures but don't quite understand all the photography lingo yet. I have a growing family and need to capture all the wonderful moments. I love to get up close to my subject. I want something that I can learn to use and creat great pictures. I eventually want a dslr camera but don't want to pay for it until I know much more on how cameras work. I want to be able to take photos up close and of my kids when they are playing but don't know I'm around. Also video them when they are saying the darnedest things or those moments you can't just talk about but need to show them when they are older.

Which camera do you recommend for Brooklyn-Ann-Haag?

Canon SX40 - $314
12 MP|35x f/2.7|1/2.5" CMOS|2.7" LCD
Canon G12 - $509
10 MP|5x f/2.8|1/1.7" CCD|2.8" LCD

Its a bit hard to get up close without them knowing you're there...so you must want a zoom lens. If you 'eventually' want a DSLR then you might just want to buy a used DSLR off of Amazon or eBay, and just get into it. I don't know much about entry level Canon DSLRs but The Nikon D3000, D3100, D5000 can be had (with a lens) for under $400 used on Amazon and all three shoot video as well.

DSLR is required a bit or lots of learning, It depends, which level do you want, somewhere between beginner and pro, or pro. DSLR can start up very fast, much faster than digital camera, so you shouldn't miss any important moment with your kids. Nikon is very good at photo quality, but canon is very at video. But I don't think you want to a pro videographer, so a Nikon like d5100, d3100 is a good choice. And about marco photography, I think you should buy a len for that, because marco photography is very special and hard, it's not easy to take a good one.
