The previous recommendations are great, but as an option you may want to look at getting a second hand semi-pro model from a reliable dealer like KEH, B&H, or Adorama.  Take a look at the Canon 50D or Nikon D200 for about the same price.  BTW, I have purchased equipment from KEH listed as "BGN" bargain rating that looks and works like brand new equipment.  This is a great way to save on good lenses and bodies.

Also, I would recommend you taking a class.  Maybe borrow a camera and take a class before purchasing might help you to make a better decision.

I've been shooting for almost 20 years now and I've seen a lot of people spend a lot of money on nice equipment and take terrible photos because they don't have a clue how to properly take a photo and don't understand the limitations of their equipment.

The following photos were taken with a $5 3.2MP point and shoot.

I have used both the camera's.... and i feel that the Nikon D 5100 is comparatively much better than Canon.....Canon's video is good for videos and produce much quality than Nikon's......but if you are only for photos then D5100 is the right one for you..

I'm a canon shooter, and as such, biased towards them, one thing you should look at however is what people you know use.  If you're friends with a bunch of Nikon people, then buying a nikon allows you to use their knowledge (and maybe borrow some gear), ditto if your friends are Canon shooters.

Also, you might find the smaller size of the canon more convenient for you, having something less bulky to carry around can be a bonus if it allows you to use the device more.

both are great. But I suggest Nikon D5100.because of its low light capability ,big sensor, and good color depth over 550d.... though 550D is not a bad dslr..its good too.. just in sense of rating I rate 5 to d5100 and 4.8 to 550D....on a scale of 5 ! :)

as a hobby i wont recommend these 2 unit's.. i just click D5100 because its better than cannon.. we can say that cannon is known than nikon but the important thing is abvout the clear image.. you can search for nikkor lenses.. and be amaze on what can it do when it cmes to lenses.. I'd rather recommend you the D3100 because its for beginners it has its guidemode.. so you can never go wrong.. with a ceapper prize than the other.. :D
