I am buying this for my dad, he is an intermediate. He uses manual mode all the time and wanted to make sure that both have the FULL potential for manual mode.

Which camera do you recommend for Tarun-Sundersingh?

Canon 1100D
12.2 MP|APS-C CMOS|2.7" LCD
Nikon D3100 - $447
14.2 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

Canon 1100D, aka T3, is the lowest model in current Canon lineup. Its features and IQ lag behind that of D3100. Unless money is an absolute issue, whereby T3 is usally advertised as being cheaper, I recommend D3100.  Better yet, I recommend D3200, newly released replacement for D3100.  It has better sensor than D3100 and new WIFI feature. Currently priced at $699 with excellent 18-55mm Nikon kit lens that outperforms Canon's version of that lens.

Yes, they both have full manual exposure mode where you control the shutter and aperture yourself.
