The sony is a strong and growing system, hard to ignore. In the long run you'll likely move to either Canon or Nikon if you continue as a professional, but for starting off, I think the a55 is a superior camera to the rebel without question.
Which camera do you recommend for goaty99?

I was going between the same exact toss up and ended up going with the A55. comparing photos to a friend who shoots with a t3i the picture quality and physical camera quality is near identical. the ONLY 2 advantages i give to the Canon is a wider lens selection and the fact that you cant shoot more than 5-10 minutes of video at a time with the Sony. I'm absolutely happy with my purchase and love the high cycle rate when i need it. -
Without a doubt, the Canon shouldn't be in the list. If you want to photograph sports, you need a fast framerate drive. The T3i pushes out only 3.6fps while the K-5 can do around 7.3fps. The Sony beats them both with a 10.2fps rate. Low light and sensitivity are both important in sports and action, so the K-5 wins there, no noise until ISO1,400 and usable shots until ISO25,000. Maximum usable ISO for the Sony and Canon are both below ISO3,000. Both the K-5 and the A55 feature in-body image stabilization, and all three can take stunning FullHD video.
Biggest seller of the K-5, though: Completely weather-proof and environmentally sealed... Cold, hot, humid, wet, dusty. The K-5 can handle everything you would ever need it to.

I was also looking at the Nikon D3200-
Intermediate I9 months ago svitekphotosThe D3200 has terrible noise control at higher ISO... Once you get it indoors, the image quality drops off horribly...
