In 40D I love the body construction Metal and I like heavy cameras! Other thing I appreciate is the 6fps shoot, like the monitor on top of the camera and the program chooser on the left.

In 550D I love the video option, I life the fact of having more MP than 40D, besides that I hate the plastic body.

Which camera do you recommend for Amauri-Di-Maia?

Canon 500D
15.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Canon 40D - $750
10.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

I've had a 40d for two years. The resolution (10mp) is fine - you get great shots and unless you are cropping loads or printing above A3, that shouldn't be an issue. The frame rate and build quality are superb, and you can pick a used one up quite cheaply these days. Suggest you do that and put any money you save towards the lenses.

Wouldn't waste the cash on an old body like a 40D, if you want the big heavy camera to pose with then save for a 50D or 60D. If you are only bothered about having good image quality then buy a 500D, 550D or 600D.

Cannon stopped using the magnesium alloy body for the 50d and 60d - I've used both cameras, but at the moment the only non-full frame canon body that has the same level of solidity is the 7D, which I suspect is out of budget. To me having a weather resistant, metal body means more flexibility and confidence when shooting - less worried about knocks or rain. The 500, 550 and 600d are all nice cameras, but neither goes above 4fps - the 40d shoots at 6.5 fps and that difference in burst rate will make a real difference with action shots.

The 50D still has the magnesium frame, the 60D (and the 500D-600D) still have a stainless steel frame over polycarbonate.

I've used 1/8000 shutter speed many times without thinking anything of it and I now wouldn't be able to be without it.  It gives you more creative freedom.

Wouldn't waste money on an old AND beginner class camera. Put a good lens on 40D and you'll get great shots out of it, plus the somewhat better viewfinder, much faster advance rate of 6.5 fps and a more solid body.

If low light - high ISO will be important for you, forgo them both and get a 550D instead, if you'll shoot action, nature (birds, macro, wildlife etc) then 40D, if you can stretch your budget a bit you may consider 50D as well, which has most of 40D's features and 500D's sensor.

Out of the 500D and 40D, if image quality is important, buy the 500D. The 15MP sensor in the 500D (and in the 50D) is superior in all aspects to the 10MP sensor in the 40D (and the 400D).

Better image quality, better resolution, better high ISO = 500D.
