Ability to take great photographs while travelling

I would like a camera that is easy to use. I'm practically a beginner, my ex -partner had a Nikon SLR D5100 but I don't like the functions of a Nikon and find Canon's easier to use. I have only ever used apart from the Nikon, point and shoot camera's but would like to step up and take wonderful family shots as well travelling shots. 

I would like it to be compact hence looking at these two camera's, however if one is better than the other this wouldn't be a deciding factor. 

As I'm a beginner in photography I would like a camera that makes me look like a professional taking great shots.
