I am a beginner photographer but a professional  exhibiting artist and university teacher who wants to take professional shots of her artwork for magazines, websites, lectures.

Which camera do you recommend for Megan-Walch?

Canon 60D - $699
17.9 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D3200 - $547
24.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

For creating digital images of artwork try looking at A3 flatbed scanners as well! I am an artist, and scan all my paintings on paper or board - (Up to 20ins x 30 ins). The resolution, sharpness and accuracy you will get this way far exceeds any digital camera available now, and probably will for another 25 years! I print giclee reproductions of my paintings: 15ins x10 ins, 360dpi 5400px x 3600 px (and that is nothing compared to the original acan size). For larger work on canvas or involving oil paint I use a Canon 450d but with a good quality prime 50mm lens and a polarising filter. I am presently looking at the Canon 650d  or 60d primarily for the extra pixels!

Keep in mind that Nikon D3200 is marketed for beginner and complete amateurs who likes to take family and events photo. Why DSLR vs point and shoot? It can still use all of Nikon lenses from the top $2000 lens down to the $120 one. I think a better comparison would be Nikon D3200 vs Canon EOS T3i, or Nikon D7000 vs Canon 60D. If you are going to document all your art works, I presume you will be using the camera on tripod at all time taking clear and sharp images. Nikon D3200 may be able to get the job done with less cost. Although, you should look into Nikon D5100 (1 level up from D3200) to see if there is anything worth the price. D3200 has 23Mp but D5100 with 16.8 Mb performs better in low light, and has an articulate LCD screen. Lastly, Nikon offers better shadow details and overall color tone. Canon tends to exaggerate their color tones (which you need photoshop or lightroom to correct).

5100 is a point better than 3200 as peter also refereed to; thats why i chose the 5100 and it never let me down

the swivel screen helps much for creative framing and extreme angles

else both cams can do the trick on a tripod
