Sandra-Hardin-Norton | Asked  over a year ago | Last response was a year ago

I want something excellent in low light, fast focus, excellent photo's, easy to use, but not so I get bored. Leaves room for me to grow. Landscapes, wildlife, family all around Camera. I can not afford a lot of lenses.

Which camera do you recommend for Sandra-Hardin-Norton?

Nikon D5100 - $497
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D3200 - $547
24.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

I have had D5100 for nearly 12 months and has not disappointed. I have only read the specs for the D3200. Megapixells are not important when comparing the two. What is more important is the lens. Save a few $$ and buy the D5100 and get a good fast lens eg Nikon 50mm f1.8 for about $230. The D3200 is lighter but I find the D5100 very easy to travel with and has the articulated screen.

I own Nikon D5100.. I have been using it for quite sometime your requirements matches that of D5100. Why?

    1. It is better in low light condition and is twice as fast as D3200 as you can increase your ISO sensitivity to get equivalent results as there is less noise in the pictures.

    2. It focuses pretty fast and gives damn good images if you can manually shoot which is pretty easy if you can learn the basic image triangle,

    3. You can take pictures of some unachievable angles with flip out screen.

    4. Its pretty easy and has got lots of modes to cover almost all occasions.

    5. It is cheaper than D3200 and Lens will be a lot cheaper as D5100 is DX format and D3200 is FX format.

    6. It is always better to get higher models of DX format than base model of FX.

I hope this will help you choose what you need. any other queries, mail me

umm sorry both are DX format.. Go for D5100, if you get a chance get D5100 with 18-105mm lens then you'll hardly need to buy lens for normal occasions

Hi Anustup, great advice, but I am 99% sure that the D3200 is DX, eg it's a crop body with an APS-C sensor. Nikon's cheapest FX (full frame) body is the D800.

Well I'm 100% sure that D3200 is DX, Just got my hands on one and the shutter lag is more than that of D5100
