The d5100 is great for what you want. I also have the d90 and it is heavier and more "professional" and it is also a great camera but not worth the extra money. Both have continuous modes that allow 3-4 frames per second. The d5100 being lighter is easier to handle in the field. I would also recommend the 18-200mm VR lens - save up you money, as it is quite expensive - but here is something most beginners do not realize: the best action shots usually come more from being closer to the subject than from using a long lens. So the 55-200mm lens is a great one also, and much cheaper.
