Ease of use and great family photos

crunchie | Asked  a year ago | Last response was a year ago

I am a beginner.  I want to take great family photos and pictures of my kids. I need to be able to take pictures of moving objects. I like a camera that is simple to use and can take black and white photographs. I am photgraphing objects both indoor and out as part of my business so I need a camera that will easily work in all sorts of lighting conditions.

Which camera do you recommend for crunchie?

Canon 550D - $1,099
17.9 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D3100 - $447
14.2 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

Me personally - The Canon. I preferred the feel of the canon - also I found them a lot more intuitive with the "Quick" menu selection. Nikon I couldn't use at first. Video - Canon just owns this, but the learning curve is steep, not to mention the computer recources required to work with the movie files. So I wouldn't buy this to for holiday videos etc. (If your not interested in video, maybe take a look at a second hand 40d? about £350-400.) I just prefer the images on canon, but to be honest - you wouldn't go wrong with either camera. They are both well priced and well made. Follow your gut! Just go in to a store and give them a try =D Oh... and canon White L lenses, enough said! :D

Definitely pros for the D3100 are low light shooting and available lenses (fallen in love this past weekend with the AF-S 55-300 VR which you can get in some telephoto bundles for a steal right now). The Canon definitely has the more beginner friendly interface as a whole, excluding Nikon's in-camera guide but as you want to shoot a variety of subjects and you will no doubt get to know your camera go for the Nikon :)

It's easy to use and takes quick pictures. As long as you understand how the camera works, the rest is just practice which makes perfect.

Dude Buy anyone.....Learning curve is steep in both...might be little easier in one....However the equipment does not make a great photographer or can take great photos its the eye behind it...the equipment just ease the way you want to paint your imagination digitally.... BTW I am a ardent fan of Canon

Don't think there was any mention of videography in the question.
