For nature landscapes while traveling, hiking & family/friends parties

This will be my 1st DSLR camera purchase. I love photography and I am a fast learner. I can afford the T3i, but am wondering if it is worth it for me right now and if I should start with the T3 and upgrade later?  It's almost a 50% difference in price! I just don't want to be disappointed with the T3 and wished I had initially bought the T3i.

I hike a lot and am planning a few trips to Iceland and Arizona and want to be able to capture some great photos of the beautiful scenery during my travels.  I also like a camera that could capture great sunsets, and lighting at night/indoors. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, any recommendations on the type of lenses I would need for Wide Lens and Macro (for extreme close ups). Thanks!

Which camera do you recommend for Mary-Reynolds?

Canon T3i - $549
17.9 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Canon T3 - $332
12.2 MP|APS-C CMOS|2.7" LCD

Go for the T3i only if you have enough cash left over for some extra lenses.  Moving from the T3 to T3i is not much of an upgrade (Accord DX to Accord EX), so go with what you can afford.  The camera body is not going to make that much of a difference how your photos look.  What will be important is lens selection.  Most beginners will get the kit with the cheap 18-55mm and think nothing of it.  For some really impressive landscapes you may want something wider like a Canon 10-22mm or Tokina 11-16mm.  These are very good, but have limited "real life" usability.  Another idea is the Canon 15-85mm.  Excellent all around with a nice range.  Only draw back is that this lens, like the kit lens, doesn't let in much light when zoomed in.  You will have to use a flash when shooting indoors or crank up the ISO.
