I have been using a DSLR for 4 years but still consider myself to be slightly better than a beginner since I I almost always use the "Auto" mode rather than try manual modes.

Which camera do you recommend for John-Duhoski?

Pentax K-5 - $692
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Pentax K-30 - $488
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

I think K-30 is better for you. It has more choice of colored body, lighter in weight, shot 24p film vs 25fps, it could be a good choice for family use.

What about the picture quality. Isn't the K-5 more professional in picture4quality?

they are both great cameras. the differences are very minimal. the k-30 has a sony censor and it focuses significantly faster than the k-5. though the k5 is a silent ninja. it is quiet for those wedding pictures and less shaky for the mirror release does not affect the camera as much as the k-30. also, the k5 body can take more of a beating, since its full on metal as supposed to plastic and and metal as in the k30. mic jacks and frame rates in video can be easily fixed with programs and a zoom mic h1. that is the way pros do it. they are very close though the body and the focusing speeds change a bit. also k30 is 6 FRAMES PER SECOND! nice! i am buying the k5 (7fps) first and then adding the k30. ps( the k30 is very loud). i have tried them both for i weak and i just don't get why i have been putting with my nikon d7000 on d 90. i dont mess with canons. they are to slow for my taste and budget. btw both the k30 k5 are the same tiny size. wich is good for stealth
