indoor and outdoor pictures of an infant

I have an old Rebel eos (not digital) that I used when I was young, but I've forgotten most of what I learned.  I have a small point and shoot that I keep in my bag and that I use when I travel but I want to upgrade to something that can take better pictures in low light, especially indoors, and that can capture great outdoor shoots as well.  I love the blurry background look on portraits...  On my point and shoot I like to use the fast action option a lot to be sure to capture the smiles.  The only advantage I see in the t3i is the flip out screen, and that I could maybe use the lenses I already have with the t3i.  I have a JVC camcorder, but I'd like to use my new camera to take videos as well, when I don't have my JVC on hand.

Which camera do you recommend for Alexandra-Mongno?

Pentax K-01 - $289
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Canon T3i - $549
17.9 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

Since you want an all-round camera, then you might want to take a serious look at the Pentax K-30... It's perfect for travelling, lots of inexpensive lenses around, and with a 1.5x sensor, you'll be able to get very good bokeh effects (blurry background).

The K-01 has all of these same bonuses, but its not as durable as the K-30 (Its quite ugly too). The K-30 is a semi-professional camera which will be able to keep up with anything you throw at it. You don't ever have to worry about it, and wouldn't it be better to spend a bit more now instead of having to buy a new camera later? Its brand new, has incredible features, and you can always upgrade to a better lens if you want better photos (16Mpix from a 1.5x sensor is good enough for up to 20"x30" prints, which is amazing quality.)

If you don't want to spend the extra cash on the K-30, then the K-01 is the next best option. All you lose is the durability, framerate, and the weather sealing on the body... Still a great camera.
