best for low light photography

George-B-Streissguth | Asked  a year ago | Last response was a year ago

Overall image quality is most important to me. The considerably greater number of focus points on the Panasonic ZS 20, the Leica lense, and faster shutter speed are all important to me; however, I am concerned about the 3,200 ISO on the Panasonic vs. the 12,800 ISO on the Sony.  I will be taking indoor and outdoor photos of decorative fountains and waterfalls; in other words, the ability to photograph moving water, sometimes in low light without a flash is important to me. I'm an amateur, and do not know which combination of these specifications is best for me.

Which camera do you recommend for George-B-Streissguth?

Sony DSC-HX20V - $440
18 MP|20x f/3.2|1/2.5" EXMOR|3" LCD
Panasonic ZS20 - $325
14 MP|20x f/3.3|1/2.5" CMOS|3" LCD

The Sony has one of the fastest Autofocus lenses of any Point and shoot camera out there. Picture quality in low light conditions is excellent and the anti shake system actually works better than I ever imagined.  I have had Canon, Panasonic, Nikon and now this Sony HX20V and in overall picture quality and overall features the Sony beats any of them hands down.

In my opinion one of the BEST High Zoom Travel Cameras out there at this time.  The video quality is better than on my 1 year old Canon Camcorder.  Now I don't have to carry a camera and a camcorder.  The Sony fills both shoes very well.  If you do take video however be sure to carry along some extra SD cards since the HD video at the highest 1080HD setting will go through Memory cards really quick.  I carry 2 x 32gb cards and they last me all day.  Oh, battery life is okay but always carry one extra battery especially if you are trigger happy like me. ;)

I debating as well. I was wondering if it worth $20 to go to HX20v from ZS19 which is ZS20/TZ30 without GPS(don't care about). I got ZS19 for $180 and I have an opportunity to get hx20v for $200. Here is what I like in ZS19 vs HX20v 1. flash location vs Pop-up where the finger could be. 2. Touch screen for manual focus 3. AE Bracketing vs just HDR in camera 4. A and S from PASM vs just P and M The colors are better in Sony as well as start up time and auto-focus is way faster than zs19. Just get this out I'm not a pixel picker and I understand that there is no such a thing as perfect camera. Any thoughts on which one to take? Thanks

Two reasons; the lens and the battery life. Slight trade off on fstop 3.3 to 6.4 but better than Sony

I agree, but I'm still concerned about the 3,200 ISO on the Panasonic vs. the 12,800 ISO on the Sony when shooting moving water in low light. Do you think I'll have a problem with the Panasonic Lumix ZS20? Does the ZS20 have any manual settings that can compensate for the low ISO?

Because the backlit CMOS, you dont find a great image quality in a point and shot.

The overall image quality provided by both cameras is more than adequate for my needs. I have determined to purchase one of these two cameras. I simply want to know if the 3,200 ISO on the Panasonic vs. the 12,800 ISO on the Sony when shooting moving water in low light will be a problem. Does the ZS20 have any manual settings that can compensate for the low ISO?

Why Point & Shoot? At the same price range I hope you will still get a new/old Sony NEX-3 or even NEX-5 by aying $100 extra.
