Taking indoor sports photos

VB-parents | Asked  a year ago | Last response was a year ago

We are looking for a camera that will take good, not blurry pictures of our daughter playing volleyball. Most games are indoors so light is not enough and distance makes using a flash impossible. Any thoughts?

Which camera do you recommend for VB-parents?

Canon SX40 - $319
12 MP|35x f/2.7|1/2.5" CMOS|2.7" LCD
Nikon P510 - $335
15.9 MP|41.7x f/3.0|1/2.5" CMOS|3" LCD

i would say the SX40 because of the f2.7 ability will give you a better usage of ISO and the light that you have in venues.  I my self do indoors sports photography for cheer teams and i find that even with my 70-200 F2.8L IS ii lens i still need to shoot at 1600ISO in most venues to get the shutter at 1/120sec or faster.  Even with that camera you will struggle though!

either one you go with shoot with it wide open and dont zoom, then crop to get the photo you want!

I hardly use the flash with the SX40. Good in low light situations. It has a setting for Sports, so should fit your needs.

most sporting venues especially competitive they wont allow you to use a flash if your on the floor, of course this is not an issue if you shoot from bleachers.

This is what I would purchase, but the 24 Zoom vs 35x bothers me. Have you headed any news as Panasonic coming out with a longer zoom. I talked to a Panasonic tech and was told the Fz150 was being discontinued, but would not elaborate on what was going to be done.
