Fast Pictures, High Picture Quality, Durable

I am more of a beginner in professional photography, though I am an Art major and will be taking Photography classes.  I currently have a Canon PowerShot A570 IS and it has served me well (I tend to point and shoot and take action photos or a quick shot).  I will mostly be using this camera for taking photos on vacations and special events and outdoor landscapes.  I like to carry my camera with me, so I need a camera that will not break easily (though I will hopefully not be in any extreme conditions with my camera.)

Which camera do you recommend for Claire-Elizabeth-Doolittle?

Canon SX40 - $314
12 MP|35x f/2.7|1/2.5" CMOS|2.7" LCD
Nikon P510 - $350
15.9 MP|41.7x f/3.0|1/2.5" CMOS|3" LCD

My friend just got this one and I am super jealous!  I love cameras that let you snappidy snap snap a bunch of pics in a row.  I always seem to be a second too late for the facial expression i wanted to capture with my Sony camera.
