When getting a DSLR, you'll be getting into picking a "system", not just a camera. That means not just one but possibly more lenses depending on your shooting needs, flashes and other accessories. Both Canon and Nikon offer comprehensive array of photographic system for evey budget and need.

Picture quality and capabilites from both systems are about equal for all intents and purposes. I recommend that you go to a seller that carries both lines and check out both cameras to see how each feels in your hand and see how the button layout and the user interface (UI) appeals to you. It becomes a matter of personal preference; in the end, you can't go wrong with either system as both cameras are capable of fulfilling your stated needs.

Agreed. Keep in mind that a whole array of flashes are available for either system to alleviate some of your low light pressures!

I would take the Nikon D5100, because of it's good low light performance and amazing image quality.

I have just bought the D5100 about 2.5 weeks ago and I am delighted! I have a 2yr old who moves fast and its ability to shoot gorgeous pictures is amazing! I bought the camera with a 18-105mm kit and that lens is very very good, I have been taking heaps of shots I am actually addicted, as I have come from a point and shoot or rather my iphone. After lots of reading Mansurovs and ken rockwell I ended up purchasing the 35mm 1.8g lens for portraits and the boekeh again, this lens is superb and I have managed to get some great shots, I find I even take this one out with us on excursions, it is great for landscapes as well. The piece de resistance is my new purchase for the camera... the SB-400 speedlight well... can I just say this completely changes the quality of the image to 1000 times better especially shots indoors... as they say lighting is everything and the bounce flash removes all the shadows and highlights beautifully, I do the same with the built in flash for comparisons and I tell you the SB-400 is a marvel would be lost without it now... I am exceptionally happy with the D5100 and would say to anyone go for it and just ENJOY...
