technical difficulties

Hwllo all,

I am a beginner in photography and I lOVE taking photos! I have the nikon coolpix s4100 touchscreen digital camera with instant photo-editing (love it!!), and  i have had the following problems with it:

-nikon LITERALLY eats batteries! I purchased a brand new $24.00 lithium battery for my camera and it was COMPLETELY dead within a day (like i stuck the battery in, went crazy with the photo-taking, the camera died, and I have not been able to revive it since! SO FRUSTRATING! need to purchase yet ANOTHER stupid lithium battery!). I have heard that Nikon EATS batteries like there's no tommorrow! I recently considered an upgrade on my camera, and I am 100%deffinelty considering a differnt brand! Yet, I have been having these signs. Signs that seem to be whispering to me that this is the right camera. Like for example:

I was talking to my dad on the phone last week, telling him about how i wasnt sure whether to invest in the canon T3, panasonic lumix, or Nikon D3100. He said he wasn't sure what i should do. I got off the phone, and turned the TV on, and right before my eyes, a commercial came on advertising the nikon D3100. I am so confused! I don't know what to do! I DO NOT want to take the risk of having any more difficulties with my cameras! please tell me what to do!

Doesn't matter. Either will be good for you and whilst you may have had a problem with a single lithium battery it is not reflective of Nikon, in the same way that issue is likely to affect Canon at the same rate. A $24 lithium battery is cheap anyway... I have one that cost me $100... was it from eBay or some third party Chinese non brand? Blame the battery not the camera I think.

Taking clear shots is more than the camera body if that at all - these bodies will give you pretty much the same thing overall. The obvious 14Mp v 12Mp isn't worth worrying about either. But I do know the D3100 overall is a good unit for starting and if you end up with any kit lenses, try and get yourself at least one fast prime, such as (Nikon wise) 35mm f/1.8G DX or 50mm f/1.8G. I recommend the Nikon on the basis it has good lens options available for you as a starter.

honestly right out of the box i took insanely clear shots, and it may be even more useful since it has a guide mode built in. either one would be good but the nikon d3100 seems to be more useful for people who want to learn photography. hope this helps!

ohh, and the battery life is really solid too, takes many shots before signs of depletion.
