MISSPAM | Asked  a year ago | Last response was 5 months ago
Looking to upgrade my camera. I want quality photos that are able to be taken in low light and action situations.

Which camera do you recommend for MISSPAM?

Sony NEX-3 - $448
14 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Sony NEX-5 - $300
14 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

Get a DSLR camera with a real viewfinder and phase detect AF! Sony NEX cameras, due to their mirrorless nature only have contrast AF, they can not track objects for sports etc.

You won't be happy with a non-phase-detect AF (speak: non-DSLR or DSLT) when you seriously want to be able to take sports or action, as the AF is not as fast with mirrorless cameras only having contrast detect AF!

If you don't get the D7000, at least look for the D3200 or D5100 or a Canon equivalent

In addition: No mirrorless cameras without rangefinder can really be considered "Pro", so far none of them has any decent viewfinder. The exceptions are Fuji X-Pro1 and X100 with hybrid viewfinder and Leica M-series cameras. The latest one looking quite capable is also the Olympus OM-D E-M5.

The Sony NEX-3 and 5 are the same camera, more or less. The NEX-5 has better video and thats it. They were released at the same time and are brother and sister cameras. ALL NEX-3 features are on the 5. Personally I don't do video so the NEX-3 was cheaper and so i bought that one. Now after saying that they are both the same, they are great in low light situations. I do a lot of pet photography and AAU basketball shots and it does great. The 7fps(frames per second) is unheard of in a small DSLR camera when shooting manuel mode, you can click away. It literally takes 7 pictures a second. Also the NEX-3 fits better in hand than the NEX-5. Its still compact, it has an automatic and manual modes so that as you grow in your knowledge of DSLR you can easily make that transition without buying a new camera.
