for vacation in europe, great image quality and easy to take around

I'm an amateur (or maybe below) photographer, right now I like to use the simple Canon Powershot A2100 IS to take many interesting photos : 118021270240614732621 at picasaweb.google.com

I'm going to have vacation in Europe (I'm from Asia, btw), and plan to upgrade camera so that can take good photos over there, especially in low light condition. Also, DLSR is no no for me, as I prefer cameras that are easy to take around (and I do not plan to become a professional photographer, anyway).

So now stumbled on these two, S100 or NEX-5n, both are the best in their class, smaller than DLSR. S100 is easier to carry and cheaper but NEX-5N has better image quality (and might be troublesome to carry around ?)

So, which one is better ?

Which camera do you recommend for Budianto-Tandianus1?

Sony NEX-5N - $499
16 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Canon S100 - $325
12 MP|5x f/2.0|1/1.8" CMOS|3" LCD

I have had to chance to take both of these cameras and directly compare the image quality that I got out of them. And after comparison, I couldn't see any difference... So you might want to have a second thought as to whether the nex is better than the s100. The main advantage of the nex5n is that you can fit a zoom lens, where as the s100 fill be limited to its 5x optical zoom.

The power of the s100 is a force to be reckoned with!

Thanks, I got Powershot S100 ! S100's 5x zoom is already great for me. If I want to have nex5n + zoom lens, I believe better to jump straight to dlsr since nex's zoom lens are pretty big :(

I had a play around with an nex7 yesterday and it took me forever to work around the manual settings, and I couldn't seem to set the focusing points. I'm sure you can get some amazing pics from the camera using automatic settings but doesn't that defeat the whole idea of a compact system camera?

ah yeah, I heard that NEX has touchscreen interface and that we have to navigate a lot through the touchscreen menus to set some stuffs... S100 is pretty easy to use, it has some dials and buttons that we can qucikly adjust stuffs. About the focusing in NEX, I remember when I was asking about NEX in a shop few months ago, the shop assistant also had difficulty in manually adjusting the focus that in the end he resorted to autofocus, lol :))

S100 has the lens ring that allows you to dedicate it to various functions ... like exposure compensation.  That alone makes this camera wonderful.  But overall, I have yet to use a camera at this size and weight that takes better photos overall.

The Panasonic DMC LX5 takes better landscapre photos than any other small P&S that I've used, but the lens barrel does not retract.  Which means you've got a great, fast Leica lens and that's why you get better resolution, color saturation, etc. but it also means it doesn't really fit in your pocket.

The closest camera to the S100 is the Sony RX100, but again, you are getting only slightly better resolution while you are getting a heavier, bigger camera.

Another wonderful feature of the S100 is the ultra slow motion movies it can take.  Yes, the resolution is low, but you do get truly super slo mo movies just like you see on TV shows.

Also, when using the regular movie mode, the image stabilization is phenomenal on this camera.  You can literally walk around with the S100 taking movies and the IS will keep the frame so steady it actually comes close to giving the effect of using a professional Steadicam mount!

If you want a true pocket P&S camera that takes great videos and photos, you really can't do better than the S100.

This is a way better deal although the point and shoot Sony with 20x zoom is amazing!
