Not a photography newbie, looking for good image quality&colors&video.

I am not new to the photography field having started out in a photography class where every other day for 2 years four times a week at school I did photography first on film then on manual mode on a digital and I have been taking pictures since I was 12. I have not had an slr but know how to work them. To manipulate my images I will mostly be set in manual mode to achieve the pictures I want and to feel more accomplished. So which camera would you guys recommend? I am looking for good colors and image quality and will also be using the video from time to time but that is not an extremely important factor. Although I am newly graduated and will be using my graduation money to buy me a camera I will use for years and years. Something that will continue to impress me and take good quality images. Money is a factor because I am buying this myself, is the D5100 worth the money and even, is the D3200 worth the money? Because I've read such a hype about just the  old D3100?? Opinions please! I love taking macro shots and portraits so is there a certain type of lens you could recommend me too? THANKS! :D

(Also I am set for college so please no hubub about how I should save my money. This is an upgrade I have long awaited and am excited and ready to get out and learn and take beautiful memories.)

Which camera do you recommend for kaleidoscopesoul?

Nikon D5100 - $497
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D3200 - $547
24.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

3200 is a smaller new 24mpx toy - which still misses the swivel screen of d5100 holding a generous 16mpx sensor - since you use manual - d5100 would also give u 1 stop more noise tolerance considering the larger pixel size

since video is not a major factor - d5100 would not turn you down

take a 35mm f1.8 which is a great low light / portrait / multi purpose lens

also consider buying a 55-300 mm for good zoom reach

look out for a good deal as philip says

suggestion - i found good deal on this site MTE1MTA_A at www.digitalrev.com

It sounds like either camera is going to be great for you. I'd suggest you buy whichever you can find a better deal on -- Yes, I know you don't want to hear about saving money... but if you're really into photography as much as it sounds like, I have no doubt that this camera will just be a stepping stone to a much better camera.
