price and quality

I am a new photographer and i am looking for a good digital camera with good video capabilities as well, I have narrowed my decision down to two cameras, the Canon powershot s100 and the Canon elph 300 hs. I plan on using both of these cameras mainly for scuba diving and will be purchasing the underwater housing along with each of these.  I realize that the s100 has a much larger sensor and is overall a much better camera.  However, money is an issue and the elph 300 hs also seems like a good camera for the price.  I would still be able to afford both, however, the s100 would be a stretch. My question is, is the s100 worth the extra money considering that i am still a new photographer, and what i would be doing with the camera.

Thank you

Which camera do you recommend for bdavis?

Hope you bought the S100 ... because the extra money is worth it.

The thing is, you want to consider the price of the camera amortized over the time you own the camera.

If you're thinking you're going to get a better camera or an additional camera that is an upgrade in a year or two, then no, just go with the lowest priced camera.

However, if you are going to be using this camera as you main camera for 3-5 years, then think about the cost of the camera more in terms of an investment you are making in the enjoyment of taking photos and the quality you get in your photos.

Given the how much better your photos are going look ... and the various wonderful features you are going to get with the S100, you have to consider the extra money more as an investment that will pay itself off over all the years you are going to use this camera.

Two years from now, you won't have to look at other people with better cameras with feelings of jealousy.  You'll have a top, top camera in 2, 3 even 4 years from now.

Not only does the S100 have a larger image sensor, it can go 2 stops higher in ISO -- which is good for low light conditions, like underwater.  The S100 also has a built-in GPS so you would be able to plot your underwater course through the GPS info in the photos you've taken.
