How important is "sharpness"

Bram-Sable-Smith | Asked  a year ago | Last response was 9 months ago

I am pretty much decided on the olympus except that I keep reading the Olympus delievers only 1,656 overall lines per picture height (although 2,300+ at dead center) versus the Nikon's 2,166 overall lines per picture height. Is the overall sharpness enough reason to grab the AW100? I am a photography novice but I have plans to delve in pretty deep. (I'm sure you hear that all the time but owing to my career choice I am aiming to be DSLR savvy within 5 yeas but can't afford it now).

I should add the the ruggedness is fairly important to me as I go to some pretty humid or arid or dusty place and do a lot of wilderness trips.

Which camera do you recommend for Bram-Sable-Smith?

Nikon AW100 - $209
15.9 MP|5x f/3.9|1/2.5" CMOS|3" LCD
Olympus TG-1 iHS - $297
11.8 MP|4x f/2.0|1/2" CMOS|3" OLED

I purchased and used the TG-1 on my recent trip to Hawaii (July 2012) and I was thrilled with this camera.  I utilized the camera during our snorkel and scuba trips (a housing is available for going below 40 ft). I also used the camera during hikes and swimming in waterfall pools and the photos were GREAT.  Note:  The lens has a special coating so water literally rolls off the lens.  Also, the camera does a great job taking fish photos and moving objects.  An excellent camera!
