The two are almost the same, but Nikon has a natural warmth in its shots that I haven't been able to achieve with any other camera. My opinion might be partial because I am a die-hard Nikon fan, but Sony doesn't seem to have a very practical selection of lenses either...
Which camera do you recommend for Colin-Sydney?

dxomark.com says that it is the Nikon D7000, but only by 2 points (80 vs 78). What/where would you like to take pictures? I would like a little more information before saying what is best for you.

Beginner II11 months ago Allan-Kimmer-JensenI would go with the Nikon D7000, I am going with that myself. The Sony is good, and if you like video it is very nice. But the Digital Viewfinder is bad when you try to take pictures against light sources. It is smaller and starts WAY faster we are taking about 8 times as fast. But both are great, the digital viewfinder is not really for me, I'll recommend that you try them both in a shop (I did this). This way you will also test the grip and feel of them both. -

Nikon D7000 has the best image quality in its range of DSLR cameras and its not comparable to Sony's image quality. The main reason is powerful sensor and image processor (of course if you are shooting RAW the image processor doesnt have anything to do with the image quality). Another thing you should consider is the availability of lenses for each of these choices; Nikon definitely provide you with a wider spectrum of lenses comparing to sony. The reason I brought up number of available lenses is when you put two pictures taken with these cameras beside each other you can not spot a gradual difference between them, this is where you should consider other aspects like lens availability and so on.

I think Nikon D7000 produces best photos and if you want to be a professional photographer someday, Nikon D700 is best to start with.

Nikon D7000 is outdated. Choose Sony.
