Having used DSLR's for years, Including on street walks, yesterday was the first day I went out without the big and bad dslr. What a difference it made. Although I'm an owner of a Canon powershot G9, I never really felt comfortable just bringing the small sensored point and shoot. Though it does shoot in raw it is still very limited by it's small sensor. After I've done extensive research on the G1X I finally bit the bullet and purchased it (reluctantly I might ad due to the price point). I went into LA yesterday armed with my new G1X. The first thing I noticed is I can't help but feel like I've forgotten something? Wow, It's almost like I'm traveling in the buff. I feel so free and light...it's wonderful!! I don't have a bag of bricks around my shoulder. But then I start to get nervous...am i going to miss that million dollar shot because all I have is my new point and shoot. I did some test shots of course the prior day and I have to say that I was quite impressed. I don't claim to be the best photographer in the world but I do have a lot of experience in the photo industry and I think I can determine the difference between a poorly exposed photo and a good one. I'm also able to determine noise and sharpness. This fat bloated point and shoot took some impressive images. The more I experimented with it the more impressed I became. You have to remember that it is just a tool. An extension of yourself. How you use that tool will determine the outcome of your images. I know it has a billion bells and whistles (slight exageration) but when shooting in raw full manual all that flies out the window. I found myself enjoying going back to the basics. All camera bodies have there own unique characteristics and the G1X is no exception. I shoot only with full frame dslr's and only use professional glass. After coming home and doing an initial scan of my images I have to say that I was not dissappointed. Yes the focal range is limited but it also forced me to compose my shots more carefully. This is a good thing. Without any post processing the images were very usable. I don't think I would be able to go back to my old G9 or yes even the camera on my iphone 4s. Especially because I didn't even notice that I was carrying it. The biggest factor when doing street photography. This is just an opinion but even at it's high price point I think it's a great tool that you will never hesitate to bring because even considering it's big fat bloated body for a point and shoot sure beats lugging around 20 pounds of gear when your walking 10 miles on the harsh streets of LA. Hope this helps in making your decision.
